What is the Second Sundays Seniors Social & Luncheon?

A Village Detroit along with the caring residents, neighborhood businesses, churches and project sponsors in the
City of Detroit have all joined forces to create this phenomenal program for our seasoned community and family leaders.
 

Our mission first began during the pandemic while seeing the detrimental effects that Covid-19 had on programs
such as the amazing and always consistent Meals on Wheels. We saw the demand for volunteers and funding, as well as the long waitlists that our seniors were now on to get these much-needed meals that have now become a vital supplement to their scarcely budgeted fixed incomes. Furthermore, we realized the increasing mental challenges in our seniors from simply being alone.

The National Institute of Aging (NIA) reports that our connections to others enable us to survive and thrive. Furthermore, people who engage in meaningful, productive activities with others tend to live longer, boost their mood, and have a sense of purpose. (NIA, “Social isolation, loneliness in older people pose health risks” April 23, 2019). The older generation in every community and family across the nation has always been the foundation of who we are. All that is pure about us and much of what is instilled in us has come from the wisdom, guidance, and teachings of our seasoned family members and other leaders who have assisted in our growth.

A Village Detroit would like you to join us in a first of many steps to let our seniors know that they are not forgotten and that they have a welcoming and grand contribution to the community, society, and themselves. Our organization has partnered with concerned individuals from all aspects of life in creating a time for our seniors to once a month have lunch with new friends; enjoy the company of others in organized discussions and continue to be heard. We are proposing much more than a meal. We are extending ourselves to assist the family leaders of our community to have a platform and an environment to be who they are. We want to hear from them on their view of current affairs; storytelling of experiences and to just watch them laugh and engage. These seemingly small efforts will have astounding effects on the lifestyles of our seniors. Let’s keep our loved ones healthy and let them know they have a powerful place in society and that the community still needs them.
